Diagnosis and Management of Choroidal Effusions

چکیده
horoidal effusion—an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the suprachoroidal space—is a common complication of glaucoma surgery. However, this may arise from other intraocular surgeries and a number of conditions, including inflammatory and infectious diseases, trauma, neoplasms, drug reactions, and venous congestion. Idiopathic causes fall under the umbrella of uveal effusion syndrome, a rare condition usually considered a diagnosis of exclusion. A note on nomenclature: Various terms are used interchangeably in the literature to describe an abnormal collection of fluid in the suprachoroidal space, including ciliochoroidal effusion, ciliochoroidal detachment, and choroidal detachment. For purposes of clarity, this review uses the term choroidal effusion(s). Hypotony is the main cause of f luid accumulation in the suprachoroidal space after glaucoma surgery, although inflammation and venous congestion may also be contributing factors. Choroidal effusion further exacerbates hypotony by reducing aqueous humor production and, possibly, by increasing uveoscleral outflow. This review will discuss various aspects of choroidal effusions, with an emphasis on clinical presentation, management, and prevention.

CT-revealed choroidal effusions as a sign of carotid cavernous fistula.
Choroidal effusions may appear as subtle abnormalities on CT scans. Recognition of choroidal effusions, however, is critical because they may be an early sign of ocular pathologic abnormality. After detection, the various causes of choroidal effusions, such as carotid cavernous fistulas, ocular hypotony, tumors, and inflammatory conditions, should be considered.

Background & Aim: Adenosine deminase(ADA) can be used in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions. In countries with high prevalence of tuberculous pleural effusions, specificity and sensitivity for ADA test is high, therefore it is an integral part of a diagnostic workup of lymphocyte-rich exudative body fluids, and it is a cheap and economically cost-effective test. No study has bee...

C ataracts normally occur in the later decades of life, which is also at a time when there is higher incidence of ocular tumors. Before a patient undergoes cataract surgery, it is important that surgeons perform a complete eye examination that includes careful funduscopy. The surgeon must be able to distinguish ocular tumors from other lesions and, should a lesion be identified, send patients f...

PURPOSE To present a case of total Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) after trabeculectomy and its surgical management. CASE REPORT A 68-year-old woman presented with large DMD and corneal edema one day after trabeculectomy. Intracameral air injection on day 3 was not effective. Choroidal effusion complicated the clinical picture with Descemet's membrane (DM) touching the lens. Choroidal ta...
